I had to leave Kota Bharu after six days. I wanted to meet my friends Jen and Keith in southern Thailand at the end of their 10 day meditation retreat. I took the train from the Malay/Thai border and did 12 hours in 3rd class, not something I would repeat again. I met up with my friends and we all went off to the island of Ko Samui, located off the east coast of southern Thailand. We found a beautiful set of bungalows, and spent some time to allow the two of them to recover from their retreat, where they had both been sick. We discovered a great Italian restaurant that also had great Thai food. The chef was Italian, but had taken courses at one of the better Thai cooking schools in the country.
After 5 days, we all needed to get to Bangkok. We spent a few days taking care of business, getting mail, using the bank, buying traveler's checks, and seeing the temples.
Jen and Keith were wondering where to go next, and I was worried about having enough funds to get to Africa later in the trip. When I got there, I called my friend Michele. She had written to me in Malaysia, and told me she was going to be in Korea for the summer visiting her father. She suggested we try to meet up somewhere in Asia. When I called, she said she wouldn't be able to rendezvous because she had a job teaching English in Seoul.
"Do you want a job?", she said. I asked for details, and she put her boss on the line. She offered me a job on the spot, if I could make it to Korea by Monday (it was Friday). I was on a plane by Saturday night.
